Ballinafad Active Age

In 2001 an Active Aged Club was founded in Ballinafad under the Aegis, of CLASP (Community of Lough Arrow Social Project). The aim of the club is to give the senior citizens in the locality and hinterland, an opportunity to meet regularly and socialise with their contemporaries and enjoy each others friendship. At present we have 30 members (21 female and 9 male). We meet in Ballinafad Field Study Centre every Tuesday at1pm.

On arrival we have a 3- course lunch (soup, main course and dessert). After lunch we play cards, bingo and enjoy physical activities- curling, skittles, parachute, bowls and recently we have taken up boccia. Last Year some of our members did a 10 weeks course in art and produced some fine watercolours- the hidden talent surfaced. In the Autumn we hope to run a similar course.

At present, eleven members are doing an 8 week computer course which is sponsored by Sligo Leader Partnership Ltd. Great progress is being made by everyone under the tutor of Catriona Walsh, who from the start demystified the use of computers and gave us the encouragement needed to ‘boot up’ and away.

At 3:30pm our hard working chef- Bernie and her assistant Patricia, produces lovely home-made scones and treacle cake plus the usual ‘cuppa’. We dispense at 4pm. The friendship and camaraderie in the group is self- evident.

In July 2008 our club became affiliated to Active Retirement Ireland with the resulting change of title to ‘Ballinafad Active Retirement Association’. We are autonomous in our decisions and pursuits and all activities within our group. CLASP, with its efficient C.E.O Eamon Haran and his staff organise several social functions for us through out the year- e.g. annual summer outings, Christmas party, tea- dances with great music and ‘High’ tea trips to the theatre, sport competition and many other activities such as seminars and workshops.

If you are over 55, retired or semi- retired and would like to join us, you may do so by phoning Eamon Haran (071)9165577 who will arrange to have you collected by CLASP Transport. You may contact me, Ann Mulhern by coming along any Tuesday to the Field Study Centre in Ballinafad.

We look forward to meeting you!
